ThePracticalBuddhist.com

So many who strive to follow the Buddhist path experience barriers that frustrate their progress. I have walked the path of Buddhism for more than 15 years now and have certainly experienced my share of barriers.   But along the way, I have had the good fortune to have had some powerful teachers who opened many gates for me.

In my books and on this website's blog, I seek to share that learning and practical experience with others.  My goal is to make the path more accessible by breaking out of the dogma of much Buddhist teaching to remove the barriers, combining a fresh take on aspects of the Buddha dharma with a practical perspective based on years of experience.

Preserving American Values

Our nation stands under attack … not from without, but from within. Both our politics and our culture have been corrupted.  Our culture caters to the worst aspects of capitalism with ethics and concern for the common good falling to the demands of greed and competition.  Our politics are ever more polarized.  This blog contains commentary from a spiritual, not religious, principled perspective, with relevant support from our founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Raising a Happy Child

The myth of childhood is that it is a happy, carefree time. But typically it is neither carefree nor happy; it is fraught with insecurity. Raising a Happy Child seeks to change this fact of human development.  It  seeks nothing less than to fundamentally alter the quality of the relationship between parents and children, and thus change the way children relate to themselves and the world around them.

We Still Hold These Truths

"The presidential election has the potential to be one of the most important in decades. Every fundamental question of national values and national policy is up for debate -- or should be … . Ron Hirsch's "We Still Hold These Truths" is a systematic and serious effort to make that debate as clear and valuable as it can be. Agree or disagree with his specific conclusions, the questions he is asking are the right ones for the public this year."
                                                                      - James Fallows, The Atlantic, National Correspondent

The message of We Still Hold These Truths is even more urgent now than when it was written in 2004. Goaded by Republican demagoguery and caught in an economic malaise, a fierce anger has arisen among much of the public against the Democrat’s progressive agenda, encouraging radical Republicans in Congress and state legislatures to destroy much of the progressive framework enacted by government during the past 100 years.
