It was a brilliant sunny day
At the beach on Cape Cod.
It was early afternoon.
The tide going out
And the beach was wide,

It was 68 degrees,
But since it was mid-March,
Few people were there,
And so when I observed them,
Spaced apart,
Strolling down the beach,
Walking their dogs,
Playing,
I was able to observe them singularly,
Much like the characters in
Sunday in the Park with George.

CHORUS

There was a lady with her dog
Constantly straining on his leash.
A strong dog.
At one point the dog stood up
On its hind legs
It wanted so much to great another dog.
It persevered in its efforts, pulling, whining,
But its owner was not amenable.
Finally the owners of the other dog
Walked on.

There was a woman
Bundled up with grey and black
Fabric despite the warmth.
Reading, quiet
Away from the water, next to the dunes.
I had the feeling
She came here often;
It was an extension of her home.
She was at peace; she was at peace.

CHORUS

Then there was a mother
With two young boys,
Perhaps age 6 and 4.
The mother was sitting down
On the sand,
Her back to me,
Solid like a rock.
She seemed protective of her children
As she watched them playing,
The older boy leading his
Younger brother in discovering
The wonders of the beach,
Their high-pitched voices
Filled with innocence and joy.

After some time a group of people
Sat down perhaps 20' from them.
I felt they had disturbed her space,
Her privacy,
Her zone of protection.
She must have felt the same
For she got up,
Her boys grabbed their sand boots
And they moved over
Another 50'.
She sat down again

And they resumed their
Banter and play,
Once again in their
Private bubble.
Discovering the
Wonders of the beach.
Their high- pitched voices
Filled with innocence and joy.
Their high-pitched voices
Filled with innocence and joy.

CHORUS

I walked through the world
Alone, on the sidewalks,
Looking at people, alone.
Even when I was with someone
I was alone,
I thought this was my fate.

And then one day
An ad in the paper caught my eye.
I responded, we talked.

And then I met you
Smiling and alive
Radiating warmth and goodness.
I was lost
But then I was found.

Two kindred spirits
Best friends for life.
That is what you and I
Are to each other.
We are family,
You and I.
We are family,
I and you.

We are not lovers
Yet we love each other more deeply
Than even some
Star-crossed lovers.
We place ourselves
In each other's hands,
There is no doubt,
Only trust and faith.

There may be no paper
That says you are mine
Or I am yours
And yet I know that our love
Will last as long as we live.
When you hold me
There's no place else I
Would rather be.

(Reprise)
There may be no paper
That says you are mine
Or I am yours
And yet I know that our love
Will last as long as we live.
When you hold me
There's no place else I
Would rather be.
We place ourselves
In each other's hands,
There is no doubt,
Only trust and faith.

You are my destiny.
You are my destiny.
